Binghamton University's Latin American Student Union (LASU) was celebrating 50 years as an organization, and asked the Binghamton Student Design Agency (BSDA) to create a magazine commemorating their history. As an intern with the BSDA, I was asked to design 4 spreads of the magazine. LASU was inspired by Cardi B's 2019 Met Gala dress for the aesthetic of the magazine, meaning red, gold, sparkly, and sophisticated.
Our biggest initial challenge was that LASU had a strict limit to the number of spreads in the magazine, yet also needed to include an extensive amount of text. I tested many different typefaces for the body text until I found one that retained readability at a small size and left the pages feeling light and sophisticated. Then, I proposed a few type pairings for titles and subtitles to my team at BSDA, where we collaboratively defined the visual identity for the magazine before working on our individual spreads.
My next challenge was breaking up the large block of text I had received as the interview transcription. I recolored certain important lines and incorporated block quotes, then formed the dramatic diagonals of the columns for a more dynamic composition. I also employed meticulous attention to detail in wrapping my lines of text around the prominent "LASU" letters on the first spread.
